Stairlift FAQs
What is a stairlift?
A stairlift, or chair lift, is a motorized lift that transports riders between levels in their home. There are many different types of Bruno stairlifts including straight, curved and outdoor models. These stairlifts are custom fitted to your staircase, to ensure seamless integration into your space for optimal appearance and safety.
How do stairlifts work?
Stairlifts are very easy to understand and operate. While there are some differences between models, all Bruno lifts have simple controls and robust safety features. All Bruno stairlifts have a simple rocker switch that controls their movement. The lift travels up or down the stairway when the rider pushes and holds the switch. The chair stops automatically when the stairlift reaches the end of the rail. If you release the switch at any point along the way the lift will stop immediately and all lifts are supplied with seat belts.
- Remote Controls: All Bruno stairlifts come with a pair of remote controls that allow a user to call or send the chair from the top or bottom of the stairs. The controls are a convenient way for a caregiver to control the seat’s motion if the rider needs assistance. The remote control also allows users to use the lift as a dumbwaiter by placing packages or a clothes basket on the seat and using the remote to send them up or down.
- Swivel at Top of the Stairs: The seat swivels away from the stairs while the footrest remains in place. The swiveling action places the rider’s feet safely on the top landing allowing the rider to stand safely.
Will a stairlift fit on my stairs?
A staircase needs to be a minimum of 32″ wide to fit a Bruno stairlift. The rail is mounted on the stair treads and will extend out from the wall between 4 to 6 inches. The stairlift’s seat, arms and footrest will fold-up when the lift is not in use. Folded-up, stairlifts will extend from 11in to 15in away from the wall.
- Folding Rail: The Bruno stairlift rail does extend beyond the bottom of the staircase 18”, which in some cases can be a problem. A manual or electric folding rail will allow the rail to fold-up and out of the way when the stairlift is not in use.
Does health insurance cover equipment cost and installation of a lift?
For the reason that they are considered a home modifications, not durable medical equipment, Medicare and other insurance providers do not cover stairlift equipment.
How do you get off the chair lift at the top of the stairs?
Bruno stairlifts feature a swivel seat which allows the rider to easily turn the seat at the top so that they can get off safely on the landing. In addition, custom curved stairlifts have the capability to have an additional bend at the top to finish on the landing or hallway.
Will a stairlift installation damage my staircase walls?
No, the stairlift is installed directly on the steps preventing wall damage.
What are the electrical requirements?
Because all Bruno stairlifts are battery operated, your new stair chair will only require an 110v standard wall outlet. This outlet charges the battery, drawing minimal power. The outlet can be up to 10 feet away from the top or bottom of the staircase.
What happens if there is a power outage?
Bruno stairlifts operate on batteries so your lift will take you up and down during power outages.
Can other people still use the stairs?
Yes. Bruno stairlifts are designed to leave enough room for others to comfortably and safely travel up and down the stairs. In addition, chair lifts feature flip up arms, seat and footrest to give even more room for others when not in use.
How long will installation take?
This will vary depending on the type of stairs being fitted with the stairlift. Most straight stairlifts can be installed quicker while custom curve stairlift installation will take more time.

However, if the existing stairlift is a straight rail and the new staircase is the same length or shorter, the rails can be cut to fit the new space.
