Reported January 16, 2026 by the Douglas County Health Department:
Influenza activity is currently high in Douglas County and most of the U.S. is now experiencing elevated levels of activity.ย
A total of 459 cases of influenza were reported last week in Douglas County and 409 were reported the week prior. CDC expects elevated influenza activity to continue for several more weeks. Influenza A(H3N2) viruses are the most frequently reported influenza viruses so far this season and is driving this seasonโs high activity. More than 90% of H3N2 viruses undergoing genetic testing through CDC have been positive for subclade K. Although circulating influenza viruses may drift from the vaccine strains, vaccination remains beneficial.ย
Influenza vaccination continues to be recommended for the 2025-26 influenza season.ย
It helps prevent severe disease and hospitalization, protects against other vaccine-included viruses, and reduces community spread. Influenza should be considered in anyone presenting with influenza-like symptoms.
Influenza antiviral drugs should also be considered as early as possible for patients at higher risk for severe illness.ย
Currently, there is no indication that A(H3N2) subclade K influenza viruses are resistant to available influenza antiviral medications. Influenza viruses are among several viruses contributing to respiratory disease activity.ย
COVID-19 and RSV activity has recently increased in Douglas County as well.
A total of 203 cases of COVID-19 and 82 cases of RSV were reported in December compared to only 64 COVID-19 cases and 12 RSV cases reported in November.ย
