How Much Do Power Wheelchairs Cost?
Your budget is another factor influencing your choice of a power wheelchair. The cost includes a relatively wide range of prices.
Does Medicare or Private Insurance Cover the Cost of Power Wheelchairs?
Getting the cost of a power wheelchair covered by Medicare or an insurance company involves meeting a number of requirements. You’ll need a prescription from your doctor for a power wheelchair. Insurance companies require an occupational or physical therapist to complete a seating/mobility assessment of patients. (Kohll’s can help connect you to an OT or PT if you don’t currently see one.)
You’ll then need to schedule a face-to-face exam with your doctor, who evaluates the OT/PT assessment, updates the prescription if necessary, and completes all required paperwork. When an insurance company approves coverage, it may be for all or a portion of the cost. If Kohll’s doesn’t have the wheelchair on hand, we will order it once we know that coverage is approved. It can take 2 to 3 weeks before it arrives at the store.
