Grandparents Should Get the Pertussis Vaccine

Wooping Cough (Pertussis) is on the rise.  Before meeting a newborn, you should get the whooping cough vaccine.

Why the pertussis vaccine is important.

Grandparents and other adults who spend time with babies can spread pertussis, or whooping cough, to them. Whooping cough is very contagious and can be deadly for babies.

How you can protect yourself and your family.

According to the CDC, data shows across the United States that more than six times as many cases have been reported as of week 47 reported in November 2024, compared to the same time in 2023. In Nebraska, the yearly reported cases have increased to nearly 300 compared to 13 reported cases in 2023.

What is Pertussis?

Pertussis also known as Whooping cough is a very contagious respiratory illness transmitted from person to person. It generally starts off with cold-like symptoms and develops into a “whoop” like cough. Whooping cough can often lead to problems breathing and hospitalizations in babies and the elderly.
