Ensure the power scooter you choose has the weight capacity to accommodate your body size. It’s also important to consider the scooter’s size and dimensions, especially if you plan to use it indoors or in tight spaces. Ensure it can easily fit through doorways and navigate the areas you need to access.

Battery Life and Range

Check the scooter’s battery capacity, charging time, and range on a single charge. Ensure it meets your daily mobility needs without frequent recharging.

Does Medicare or Private Insurance Cover the Cost of Power Scooters?

Getting the cost of a power scooter covered by Medicare or an insurance company involves meeting a number of requirements. You’ll need a prescription from your doctor for a power scooter. Insurance companies require an occupational or physical therapist to complete a seating/mobility assessment of patients. (Kohll’s can help connect you to an OT or PT if you don’t currently see one.)

You’ll then need to schedule a face-to-face exam with your doctor, who evaluates the OT/PT assessment, updates the prescription if necessary, and completes all required paperwork. When an insurance company approves coverage, it may be for all or a portion of the cost. If Kohll’s doesn’t have the power scooter on hand, we will order it once we know that coverage is approved. It can take 2 to 3 weeks before it arrives at the store.
